Guion "Guy" Bluford became the first African-American in space when he joined the crew of the first space shuttle mission to launch and land at night.
"We had to, as a crew, figure out the techniques that were required to launch the thing at night and as well as land the thing at night," Dr. Bluford told collectSPACE in 2002 on the anniversary of his 1983 STS-8 mission, which was dedicated to deploying a multipurpose India-built satellite and conducting medical measurements to understand the effects of space flight on the human body.
Bluford's first flight and the three that followed also blazed the path forward into space for African-Americans.
"I feel very proud of being a trailblazer with reference to space flight, particularly for African-Americans," he said. "I recognize I was one of several African-Americans that came into the program, and I think we have all made significant contributions to the program."
Bluford's other missions included the first of the German-directed Spacelab science flights (STS-61A in 1985) and two Department of Defense-dedicated missions (STS-39 in 1991 and STS-53 in 1992).
After retiring from NASA in 1993, Bluford took posts in the aerospace sector, and for the past 16 years, has served on several industry boards. Currently, he serves as the president of Aerospace Technology Group, an engineering consulting organization in Ohio, and is associated with the Coalition for Space Exploration.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Christoph Waltz won the supporting-actor Academy Award on Sunday for his role as a sociable fiend of a Nazi in "Inglourious Basterds," while the blockbuster "Up" was named best animated feature.
The first award of Oscar night went to Austrian-born Waltz, a veteran stage and television actor in Europe who had been virtually unknown in Hollywood before Quentin Tarantino cast him as the prattling, ruthless Jew-hunter Hans Landa in his World War II saga.

After several back and forth statements from Solar and the Elam family, DJ Premier recently revealed his feelings regarding his old partner Guru and the controversy surrounding him.
On his HeadQCourterz radio show last night (March 5), Premier advised that he had previously made no official statements on Guru’s situation, despite numerous quotes over the past week carrying his name.
“First of all anyone that’s been seeing any statements from me, it’s all false,” Premier explained. “If it wasn’t told to someone directly, it’s not coming from me. I have never made a statement until today, and I will not make a statement until all the facts are given from the proper people. And the proper people are not giving the facts, so there’s nothing to say until we get that.”
Producer Solar broke the news on Tuesday (March 2) that his rhyme partner Guru (Keith Elam) had successful surgery, and was expected to make a complete recovery from a massive heart attack.
A statement purported to be from Guru himself soon followed, stating that Solar is “the only person who has accurate info on my situation.”
