L.A. Reid

Def Jam CEO L.A. Reid has been criticized by the media for his recent signing of Belize-bound rapper Shyne, and now his job is said to be on the line. The rumor is supported by his failure to appear at a speaking engagement where he was likely to face questions regarding the safety of his position.

The Def Jam exec was scheduled to speak at Billboard Magazine's 2010 Music & Money Symposium at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City on March 4, an event which people paid up to $1,000 to attend, hoping to hear Reid discuss the future of his label. Mere hours before his engagement, however, Reid pulled out, claiming he had a sick child to take care of. Rumors immediately spread that Reid ducked out of his speaking appearance in order to avoid tough questions regarding his future at Def Jam, under scrutiny for having recorded underwhelming sales and made several questionable deals.

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, one of the oldest civil rights groups in the nation, will announce the successor to Chairman Julian Bond on Saturday as the organization strives to prove its relevance and influence to a new generation.

NAACP Vice Chair Roslyn Brock has emerged as the favorite to fill the seat left by Bond, a civil rights leader who has held the post since 1998.

Bond, a stalwart of the civil rights movement, helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, known for its student sit-ins in the early 1960s, and served as the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center. He served in both houses of the Georgia Legislature, totaling two decades in office, before leading the NAACP.

"I think he's been enormously effective; he's just a thoughtful person with a rich history in civil rights struggles," said historian Patricia A. Sullivan, whose book, "Raise Every Voice," chronicled the history of the NAACP.

Sullivan said Bond brought his experiences from the forefront of the civil rights movement to his role as chairman to take on disparities in the criminal justice system, education, housing and unemployment to the national level.

Raheem Devaughn

Raheem Devaughn
and Jason Derulo made solid debuts on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week, coming in just below Sade and American Idol vet Danny Gokey.

While each failed to reach the top of the chart, which went to Lady Antebellum, followed by Sade,' the duo's albums faired well thanks to singles like "Bulletproof".

Raheem Devaughn is this week's top R&B related debut, landing at no.10 on the Billboard 200. The "Bulletproof" singer's long anticipated album"The Love & War Masterpeace" opened with 45,000 copies sold, ironically tying his last effort, "Love Behind The Melody," which debuted with the same sales in 2008.

After claiming the top spot on the UK Singles chart with "In My Head," Jason Derulo's self-titled debut arrived at no.11 on the chart this week. Selling 42,000 copies "Jason Derulo" (the album) follows the chart-topping (Hot 100) single "Whatcha Say".
